This Year's Climb: Why Mt. Kilimanjaro?
For our first annual "Climb for a Cure" we hoped to identify a peak that could push us physically, but not require technical mountaineering skills. Rising 19,340 ft out of Africa's ancient crust, Mt. Kilimanjaro's Kibo summit is the highest peak on the continent, and the 4th most prominent in the world. However, millennia of erosion have softened the mountain's rugged exterior by carving away many of the rock formations most challenging to mountaineers - leaving a peak that, although more than 3.5 miles high, is not technically challenging.
